Unless I am getting my Hebrew School information all wrong, I think Hanukkah was probably a more nationalistic holiday, like July 4th, where the Maccabees fought back to re-take the Temple, but after the Temple was destroyed, the rabbis were a little nervous about another disaster occurring, so they re-interpreted the holiday to be more "spiritual," with the miracle of the lights. It remained a pretty minor holiday until everyone got all jealous of Santa Claus! Never was crazy for Hanukkah. As a Jewish guy, like your husband, I prefer Passover. Better food.
